Book editing for authors

Whether you are a successful author already or are writing a novel for the first time, the need for a professional book editing service is inescapable.

When you write a story, you focus so heavily on the narrative and the development of your characters that you overlook the finer details. For the months or even years that you’re working on the book, you’ll get so close to your fictional world that you’ll struggle to stand back and observe the work objectively, as a whole, and be able to tell which bits work and which bits need work.

It’s also surprisingly hard to spot grammatical errors in your own writing. This is true even when writing a short document like a CV, so think how difficult it must be to proofread your own 200,000-word novel!

Therefore proofreading and editing is, and always will be, a key part of the professional writing process. We provide the extra pair of eyes required to spot the mistakes and, in the editor’s case, any possible weaknesses in your writing.

At Full Proof, we believe our book editing and proofreading services for authors are unsurpassed in terms of service quality and value. Ben, our specialist proofreader and copy-editor for authors, is a first-class honours English graduate with an MA (with distinction) in Creative Writing. Unlike many other proofreaders and copy-editors, he can also confidently and effectively critique your work if requested.

Our services for authors include proofreading and copy-editing the following types of documents:

  • Novels
  • Short stories
  • Poetry
  • Biographies
  • Manuscripts
  • Film and TV scripts

Our services are bespoke so there is no fixed rate. When you send us your work, we’ll evaluate it and work with you to decide which level of editing you require.

Most authors opt for our editing and proofreading service. This involves editing the document on screen using Word’s track changes to correct any spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax and consistency errors and also to fix any layout issues.

The edited document is returned to the customer along with recommendations regarding areas for improvement, such as narrative modes and tense usage. Once you’ve accepted or rejected the changes and suggestions, Ben will print out your revised version and proofread the entire document to catch any remaining errors.

“I am writing to say a big thank you to you, Ben and Full Proof for helping me at short notice with the proof reading of my autobiography, A Bored Casson is a Dangerous Person.
Unfortunately, the person helping me in writing my autobiography had delays beyond his control which has put this project behind. The knock-on effect was that my book may not have been ready to give to around one hundred and fifty friends this Christmas, many of whom are very elderly, who have played an important part in the success that I enjoy today, and who sadly may not be with us for Christmas 2017.
Thanks to you and your team, the book is back on schedule to be delivered early December, and my friends will be delighted to receive it. Alice Edmonds, my personal assistant, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you and Ben. You have at all times been nothing short of totally professional, a good communicator and beaten the agreed time lines by days for which we are very grateful – an understatement!
The professional sharp eye and attention to detail, by both you and Ben, has ensured that A Bored Casson is a Dangerous Person will be a book that I will be very proud of. Thank you. Not only would I be very pleased to work with you again on another project, I would not hesitate to recommend you to others, which I will certainly do this week. Good luck with Full Proof. The service you provide is first class, you deserve to succeed, Alice and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you, very much so. Thank you again.” John Casson, Cornwall.

“I have never used a proof reading company before and was pleasantly surprised at the level of interest Full Proof showed in my work. Not only did they give my work a fantastic proof read, they also made improvements and suggestions at how to improve my work in a non-patronising way. I would recommend them to anyone. ” Paul Webb, Stockwell.
